The Edomites are a Semitic people whose descendants may be present in the genealogies of many people today. The Edomites were a group of people who lived in the ancient land of Edom, which is now southwestern Jordan. The Edomites were closely related to the Israelites, and according to the Bible, they were descendants of Esau, the elder brother of Jacob, the patriarch of the Israelites.

Location

History
The Edomites occupied the area around the 13th century BCE. They were a prosperous people due to their strategic location on the trade route between Arabia and the Mediterranean and their copper industry. 

Name
The Hebrew word Edom means "red". The Hebrew Bible relates the name to Esau, the founder of Edom, because he was born "red all over". 

National deity

The national Edomite deity was called Qos. 

Migration

After the Nabataeans conquered Edom and Moab, the Edomites migrated to southern Judaea, where they were known as Idumaeans
